#1 Psychonauts 2
Best Art Direction and Creativity

What a great time I had with this game. It’s full of fun, great characters and a good story to boot. It might not be a graphical heavyweight for the Xbox Series X, but it still tickled my eyeballs with its incredible art design.

Review Verdict: ★★★★★

Psychonauts 2 is a joy to play, and a shining example of what makes video games great. I enjoyed playing it so much that I didn’t want it to end, resulting in my first ever full 100% completion of a game’s collectibles and achievements.

#2 Metroid Dread
Best Pure Video Game Experience and Level Design

If there’s one game that got its hooks in me in a way that I just couldn’t tear myself away from it, it’s Metroid Dread. This game wasn’t really that high up on my priority list, as I haven’t even really spent much time playing Metroid games before, despite enjoying the MetroidVania genre. Not long after I began my review playthrough, I realised that this was a game that was grabbing a hold of me and hanging on… HARD.

Metroid Dread is such a perfect classic representation of what a video game is, and what it feels like to play a game that feels like the geniuses that designed and put it together are nothing less than pure masters of their craft. The graphics on the Switch look great, but the smooth, progressive evolution of the gameplay combined with some of the best level design I’ve ever seen make this most possibly the best game that came out this year. The Game Awards seem to think it was, seeing that it got one of their top honours.

Review Verdict: ★★★★★

Metroid Dread is the Nintendo Switch’s newest must-have title, delivering hours of pure gameplay joy that’s complimented by great art and level design. It’s on my list of Game of the Year contender, and can’t recommend it highly enough.
