Borderlands 4 Review – It’s About Time!

Borderlands 4 Review – It’s About Time!

From the moment I fired my first weapon in Borderlands 4, I was genuinely concerned and wondering if Borderlands 4 was going to fall flat with me, and be the next title in the franchise to commit the same sin of just being “more Borderlands.”

After spending a chunk of time playing and testing solo, split-screen, and online 4-player co-op, it turns out Borderlands 4 is EXACTLY what I’ve been waiting for, and it is AWESOME.

Let’s take a look.

Gearbox has done this really impressive trick where they’ve managed to get Borderlands 4 to feel both familiar and fresh.

The new world, called Kairos, looks great and is fun to explore with new movement systems like grappling, sliding, and gliding, plus your own personal tractor slash Harley Davidson slash podracer. Borderlands 4 also looks fantastic thanks to a much-needed visual upgrade over previous entries, running great in the 60fps performance mode on PS5 and Xbox Series X, though only 30fps on Series S.

There’s no ‘i” in Borderlands

You can pick from a team of four new characters, and things can be shaken up depending on which of their three action skills (and trees) you upgrade on your quest to defeat the big baddie called The Timekeeper, with a campaign length that can run you anywhere between 25 and 400 million hours.

Better Together

The online multiplayer has been solid, with easy hop-in multiplayer and retained progression. Split-screen is another decent way to play, although it’s locked to 30fps, and both view options leave you feeling like you can’t see all that well.

Verdict: 9/10: Borderlands 4 has its hooks in me. The new features combined with the familiar Borderlands themes, weapons, and gameplay systems all come together very nicely to deliver the first entry since Borderlands 2 that actually excites me.
